After a disappointing 1-3 home loss to Reims, Bordeaux defender Paul Baysse offers an honest assessment of the team’s performance, collective errors, and his aspirations to continue with the Girondins.
Paul, how do you explain this defeat against Reims?
Paul Baysse: We started very poorly. We conceded a goal in the 15th minute and then another just three minutes later. It’s incredibly tough to come back from being down 0-2 at home so quickly. Honestly, we’re disappointed. It’s frustrating to end 2020 on such a low note. It’s been a challenging year in many ways, and finishing like this hurts. We were too passive in the first half, and we paid the price. Spending the holidays with this kind of performance on our minds is hard to accept.
Why do you think the team has struggled with consistency?
PB: I don’t have a simple solution or explanation. We lacked intensity and didn’t give it our all, even though we had the chance to push with everything we had. Determination, solidarity, and commitment are non-negotiables, and we failed to deliver in the first half. We tried to recover in the second half, and we did manage to score, but it wasn’t enough.
Do you think there’s a “home complex” affecting the team?
PB: A complex about playing at home? No, I don’t think so. Unfortunately, there are no fans in the stadium, so the usual pressure of a home crowd isn’t a factor. The pitch is the same everywhere. It’s not about the environment, it’s about what we bring to the game.
Are you concerned about recurring collective errors?
PB: Concerned? Not really. But we do need to focus more. We’ve shown we’re capable of playing well in many matches, yet these careless mistakes cost us. It’s frustrating, especially when performances like today leave us heading to the locker room with our heads upside down. Spending the holidays like this is tough, and we’re all feeling the sting.
Have there been any updates about extending your contract?
PB: Discussions started earlier this week, and I hope they’ll pick up again after the holidays. I don’t think I’ll find the contract under the Christmas tree, but I’m optimistic it’s not far off.
Do you want to continue your career at Bordeaux?
PB: Absolutely. This club means everything to me. It’s where I grew up, and it represents my city. Being able to continue the adventure here would be a great source of pride. I’ve been through some difficult times, but I’ve never given up. Extending my stay at Bordeaux would be both a reward and a testament to my determination.
